When the Ritz-Carlton opened mid-mountain at Northstar in 2009, it gave Tahoe something the lake had never had: genuine slopeside five-star — ski valet handing you warmed boots, lifts a few yards from the door, and the mountain's corduroy running past the terrace. It remains California's only ski-in/ski-out hotel at this level, and the architecture holds up the billing: a stone-and-timber lodge whose great room rises three stories around the fireplace, with window-walls to the pines and the terrace's firepits staffed, in season, by the hotel's famous s'mores service.
Rooms and suites carry the mountain-luxury brief — leather, iron, wool, deep tubs, and in the suites, real wood-burning-style fireplaces and valley views — while the club level's five-times-daily spreads convert skiers into lobbyists for never leaving. The 17,000-square-foot spa (co-ed grotto hot tub included) is the region's most complete; the heated outdoor pool and hot tubs run steaming through snowfall; and dining spans Manzanita's cal-mountain fine dining, the Living Room's all-day apres (open to the public via the village gondola — the mid-mountain perch makes it Tahoe's best fireside bar), and the Backyard Bar's slope-side burgers.
Winter logistics are the luxury: Epic Pass terrain out the door, ski valet, village access by the connecting gondola rather than a car. Summer flips the register — alpine lawn games, guided hikes, Northstar's bike park below, stargazing programs — at the value season's gentler rates. Lake Tahoe itself is a 15-minute drive (the hotel runs lake shuttles in summer); guests wanting water at the door should look to Edgewood or the Hyatt — this is the mountain throne. Book directly; Christmas and powder-season weekends go first.

Is it actually on the slopes?
Yes — mid-mountain at Northstar with ski-in/ski-out access, ski valet, and its own gondola connection down to the village. In winter you click in steps from the door.
Is it worth it for non-skiers?
The spa, firepits, great room, and Living Room apres carry the stay without skis — and summer's alpine-lawn season runs gentler rates. Lake-focused travelers may prefer a waterfront property instead.
How far is the lake itself?
About 15 minutes down to Kings Beach; the hotel runs summer lake shuttles. The property's own view is forest and slope — the lake is the day trip, the mountain is the home.
